Ted Feifer led a core negotiation and mediation skills training for the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, in Pristina, May 11-13, 2009. Participants in the program represented mission HQ and field offices, a cross-section of professional functions. There were 13 international staff coming from the United States, Hungary, Spain, Italy (2), Germany (2), Finland, France (3), Ukraine, Ireland, and Serbia, and 10 national staff. The goals of the program were to strengthen negotiation, diplomatic and third party skills, strengthen problem solving in individual and group situations, and share experiences and lessons learned in preventing, managing and resolving conflicts.
The workshop utilized a mix of interactive discussions and exercises to address conflict styles, effective communication, the third party role, negotiation, and practical problem solving. A video served as the vehicle for identifying emotional pressures in negotiation, and best practices in dealing with them. A complex, multi-party simulation served as the capstone exercise for the workshop. The common concluding observation of participants was that the material covered would be particularly useful in their everyday work.
