On February 16, USIP hosted a conversation with prominent political figures and historians as they discussed their differing interpretations of the meaning of the 1973 Peace Accords and their influence on present-day U.S.-Vietnam relations.
On February 15, USIP hosted a conversation with Dr. Jackson and Dr. Kang that explores how policymakers might use his layered understanding of East Asia’s regional stability to inform a statecraft that consolidates, rather than embrittles, peace.
On January 19, USIP and Voice of America hosted a discussion with journalists and media experts about the challenges facing media in Afghanistan today and what those both inside and outside the country are doing — and can do — to protect media freedom and continue their work safely. The conversation also looked at lessons from other authoritarian contexts to discuss what has worked to preserve media freedom in hostile environments.
On November 4, USIP hosted a conversation with five of the essayists on the sources of tension in the Japan-South Korea relationship and the creative ways in which policymakers, practitioners, and experts can address topics such as forced labor, collective wartime memories, the legacy of “comfort women,” the U.S.-South Korea-Japan trilateral alliance, and regional stability.
On October 25, USIP hosted a conference that brought together former senior officials and top experts to explore these critical questions and identify lessons to inform U.S. policy in the future. The conference featured three public panels that looked at why no meaningful intra-Afghan peace talks took place from 2001 to 2021, as well as the missed opportunities and missteps that derailed efforts to reach a political settlement to the conflict.

USIP hosted a two-part livestream of USIP’s Dialogue on War Legacies and Peace. The event brought together diplomats, advocates and authors to draw lessons from U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia that could apply to conflicts elsewhere in the world. The inspiring presentations looked at how Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians are healing from wartime suffering and building a future based on trust and shared interests.
A recent USIP Special Report surveys the contemporary dynamics, drivers, and manifestations of Islamist extremism in Bangladesh. To discuss the report and its implications, on September 29, USIP and the report’s authors, Mubashar Hasan and Geoffrey Macdonald, hosted a timely virtual discussion moderated by USIP senior advisor Daniel Markey.
On September 16, USIP hosted a discussion with the authors of the recently released report “U.S.-China Signaling, Action-Reaction Dynamics, and Taiwan.” The conversation provided takeaways and offered insights on the ongoing tensions over Taiwan in U.S.-China relations.
On September 8, USIP hosted a Twitter Space discussion on the causes and impact of these catastrophic floods on Pakistan’s already fragile political and economic situation. The conversation also looked at what role the international community can play in helping Pakistan recover from this humanitarian crisis and better prepare for future disasters.
