The Institute’s events help shape public policy and priorities to advance peaceful solutions to conflict and strengthen international security.
On May 5, USIP hosted a conversation with the working group’s co-chairs as they presented findings from the final report. The discussion examined how elite capture of security sectors abroad can undermine the effectiveness of U.S. security sector assistance and drive violence — and what policymakers can do to make security sector assistance more effective.
On December 16, USIP, the National Democratic Institute, the International Republican Institute, the National Endowment for Democracy, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems held an in-person conversation with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.
On November 4, USIP hosted a conversation with Ambassador Martin Kimani on ways to advance the goals of the 2022 U.S.-Africa Strategy, the U.N. Security Council’s responses to threats to peace and security in Africa and globally, and Africa’s role in advancing peace and development through efforts in the United Nations and other multilateral forums.
On September 28, USIP and the RESOLVE Network hosted a virtual conversation as part of the seventh annual RESOLVE Global Forum Series. The discussion examined the complex interactions between armed groups, civilians, state actors and international security — as well as how members disengage from CBAGs and reconcile with their local communities.
On June 2, 2022, the U.S. Institute of Peace together with The VII Foundation will open “Imagine: Reflections on Peace,” a multimedia exhibit that explores the themes and challenges of peacebuilding through an immersive look at societies that suffered — and survived — violent conflict. Using historical photos, texts, video profiles and interactive opportunities, the Imagine exhibit brings visitors face-to-face with the realities of violent conflict and asks the question: “Why is it so difficult to make a good peace when it is so easy to imagine?”
On June 23, USIP hosted a discussion with Sudanese activists and scholars on how Sudanese civic leaders can learn from their earlier strengths as they recover from the 2021 coup — as well as what the path forward might hold for the pro-democracy movement in Sudan and their global allies.
Join USIP and the National Endowment for Democracy for a conversation with civil society leaders on the prospects for peace and democracy in CAR. The discussion will assess recent peace and dialogue processes as well as offer recommendations for how the international community can support democracy in CAR — particularly in the lead up to local elections this September, the first in CAR in more than 30 years.
On April 28, USIP and The Heritage Foundation held a discussion with Tony Elumelu on the links between entrepreneurship and peacebuilding in Africa — as well as how African leaders and the international community can harness the potential of the continent’s private sector to move Africa toward a better future. Also joining this important conversation was Dana Banks, special assistant to the president and senior director for Africa at the National Security Council.
From February 25 to March 7, USIP hosted a series of Twitter Spaces between USIP experts and peacebuilding practitioners working in Afghanistan, Colombia, Myanmar, the Sahel and Ukraine to underscore the importance of protecting and facilitating women’s meaningful inclusion in peacebuilding
On February 23, USIP held a discussion with experts from across the foreign policy community on ways to counter this trend toward authoritarianism and make U.S. and international support for democracy more effective. Building on USIP’s two-day forum on The Shocking Rise in Coups, this conversation explored concrete steps to advance the goals of the 2021 Summit for Democracy and offer forward-looking policy recommendations.
