What role can and have religious leaders played in helping to resolve international conflicts around the globe? On November 2, the Institute will host a special workshop moderated David Smock, Director of the Institute's Religion and Peacemaking Program, to examine the lessons learned from Mennonite contributions in conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Panelists will include Institute grantee and professor John Paul Lederach and Cynthia Sampson with the Institute for Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University. Discussion will include accounts of Mennonite initiatives to prevent, resolve, or transform conflict in a variety of settings, including South Africa, Northern Ireland,Colombia, Nicaragua, Somalia, Liberia, and Haiti. The panel will also explore Mennonite peacebuilding, comparing it to Quaker and secular techniques, exploring its relationship with Mennonite religious values, and assessing its strengths and weaknesses.
