This Current Issues Briefing was held in conjunction with the Institute's publication of Susan Collin Marks' Watching the Wind: Conflict Resolution During South Africa's Transition to Democracy.
Unlike most instances of peacemaking, in South Africa grassroots participation was formally built into the peace process through the National Peace Accord. Drawing from the experience of South Africa, Northern Ireland and the Balkans, the panel:
- considered the consequences for peace agreements when official and grassroots efforts are not strongly linked; and
- evaluated the potential for such linkage to improve the overall success of peace agreements.
The presentation was followed by questions from the audience and the internet audience.
