Institute trainers Nina Sughrue and Ted Feifer conducted a Workshop on Managing Conflict: Tools for Communication, Problem Solving and Negotiation in partnership with the Land Center for Human Rights (LCHR), in Cairo, Egypt, March 15-17, 2007. The LCHR is an Egyptian NGO founded in 1996 that advocates on behalf of Egyptian farmers. Conflicts over property rights and land disputes have steadily increased in recent years, and the importance of addressing and resolving these issues with peaceful negotiations continues to grow.
The workshop included 63 participants from Egypt's 12 governorates. Twelve participants were from Giza, eight from Behira, eight from Sohag, seven from Bany Swief, seven from Cairo, four from Fayoum, three from Qena, three from Qalubeya, three from Daqahleya, three from Menya, three from Monofeya and two from Sharqeya. Seven were women. Approximately half of the participants were farmers from rural Upper Egypt and the remaining participants work for NGOs on rural poverty and women’s empowerment.
The workshop provided participants the opportunity to learn new skills in problem solving and conflict management, and to practice them in exercises drawn from real situations. This was the first such training most of the participants had ever experienced.
