Securing Somalia's Future: Options for Diplomacy, Assistance, and Security Engagement
Public event co-sponsored with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
In light of the recent turmoil in Somalia—Ethiopia's invasion in late December and the U.S. military strike on suspected al Qaeda targets in early January—the U.S. Institute of Peace has collaborated with other leading institutions in Washington to bring together experts from the region and representatives from international and multilateral organizations and the U.S. government.
The conference will be designed to help inform U.S. and international policy toward Somalia and facilitate a constructive multilateral approach. Panels will examine the quickly evolving situation in Mogadishu and the broader region as well as options for international diplomacy, assistance, and security engagement. Keynote speakers include Senator Russell Feingold (D-WI), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa at 9:00 AM and Ambassador Jendayi Frazer, Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, U.S. Department of State at 12:30 PM. Other conference participants will include Somali experts from the region, representatives from international and multilateral organizations, and representatives from the U.S. government.
