(Washington) -- The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) has appointed Marcia Wong as director of intergovernmental affairs. Wong will play a leadership role in ensuring effective USIP institutional relations and interaction with the federal government, especially the Departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security, and USAID and the Peace Corps.

In her previous assignment with USIP, Wong served as deputy director of intergovernmental affairs with special focus on interagency processes for enhancing USIP's coordination with the State Department and USAID.

"Marcia excels at working with motivated people to identify problems and develop concrete solutions," said Dr. Richard H. Solomon, USIP president. "She brings skills in planning and implementation of partnerships to enhance whole-of-government coordination. Her experience in international diplomacy and development will enable the Institute to better support national security and especially the needs of the State Department and USAID."
 
Prior to USIP service, and after 29 years of service with State and USAID, she worked as a foreign affairs consultant in crisis management, conflict prevention and mediation, and training and education. As a U.S. foreign service officer, she served in Japan and Russia, as associate dean of the foreign service institute, director for economic growth at USAID, senior coordinator for South/Central Asia and East Asia Pacific, deputy coordinator of the Office of Reconstruction and Stabilization. She has been awarded numerous international service awards.
 
In announcing her appointment, Solomon said, "Marcia is an outstanding professional and highly respected throughout the international affairs community. The extraordinary range of management and leadership experience she brings to this role will greatly advance USIP collaboration across the government, increasing our nation's ability to manage conflicts before they escalate.”
