(Washington) – USIP Senior Rule of Law Adviser Scott Worden is available to comment on Afghanistan governance and the recent parliamentary elections. Worden was in Afghanistan for the 2010 parliamentary elections as a member of the National Democratic Institute's Observer Mission. He was one of three U.N.-appointed international members of the 2009 Electoral Complaints Commission in Afghanistan.
Looking at recent reports of fraud, Worden stated:
"The ultimate success of the 2010 elections depends less on the level of fraud that was committed on election day - which was bound to be high - and more on the way in which the fraud is handled."
A full analysis is available in Worden's new USIP Peace Brief, "Transparency is the Key to Legitimate Afghan Parliamentary Elections." He is available for additional comment on issues of Afghanistan governance, elections and corruption.
