Online Self-Paced Micro-Courses

The USIP Academy’s free online micro-courses introduce learners to foundational topics in conflict management, providing the convenience and accessibility that busy professionals at all levels need to begin improving their knowledge and skillset. By offering these introductory courses at no cost, the USIP Academy ensures that geographic location nor socio-economic status ever determine one’s ability to further his/her education. These micro-courses offer introductions to 12 diverse, rich topics, helping learners determine where they’d like to focus their time and in which topic areas they could most benefit from learning more.

Our full-length, self-paced online courses are accessible anywhere in the world at any time, in a convenient, flexible format. These courses provide engaging training opportunities that provide individuals worldwide with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively prevent violent conflict. Our full-length, self-paced online courses are structured around video lectures from instructors and subject matter experts, and are supplemented with recommended resources, activities, discussion forums, case studies and knowledge assessments.

This learning model is best suited for individuals who:

  • Require flexibility in the time needed to complete a course;
  • Have low or limited internet accessibility;
  • Prefer to navigate a learning experience at their own pace and around their own schedule; and
  • Are unable to travel to another location to participate in a course.

Online Instructor-Led Courses

The Academy’s instructor-led online courses provide an opportunity for learners to participate in a cohort-style class led by an expert instructor no matter where they are in the world. These classes are conducted online, but allow learners from across the globe to interact with and learn from each other, as well as their Academy instructors.

This learning model is best suited for individuals who:

  • Want direct engagement and interaction with course instructor(s) and participants;
  • Prefer having a guided and scheduled learning experience;
  • Desire feedback on work they produce; and
  • Are unable to travel to another location to participate in a course.
In-Person Courses

In-Person Courses

The USIP Academy offers in-person courses at USIP Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and in other locations around the world. These courses are participant-centered and focus on growing participants’ knowledge base. Our expert instructors introduce and contextualize engaging content and use a variety of exercises to ensure participants grasp these important concepts and understand their applications in their own communities. In-person courses are driven by the experiences that participants bring to the class, as there is a heavy focus on shared learning and discussion. 

This learning model is best suited for individuals who:

  • Want face-to-face interaction with instructors and other participants;
  • Enjoy applying skills through simulations and exercises;
  • Prefer a condensed and intense timeframe for their learning experience; and
  • Desire a more customized experience.
In-Person Workshops

In-Person Workshops

The USIP Academy’s in-person workshops expand participants’ knowledge bases and allow learners to work collaboratively and actively to solve the issues they face in their communities. With expert counsel from respected thought leaders and peer-to-peer learning that encourages dialogue about new and proven methods, a world of opportunity opens up to our workshop participants. These workshops include the creation of a document or work product that will advance the conflict prevention efforts of each participant, such as a syllabus or proposal.

This learning model is best suited for individuals who:

  • Have experience working on the ground in managing conflict;
  • Are looking to participate in an intensive, collaborative learning experience; and
  • Would benefit from expert guidance in solving tangible problems they face in their communities.

In-Person Trainings

The Academy’s in-person trainings teach participants how to put their knowledge into action. These skills-based learning experiences have a strong emphasis on applied learning. Participants in these trainings are given ample time to process new material and apply it through experiential exercises, role plays and simulations.

This learning model is best suited for individuals who:

  • Are looking to develop their peacebuilding skillset;
  • Want to practice real-life situations in a controlled environment with advice from experts in the field; and
  • Require time to fully understand complex concepts and strategies.
