(Washington) – The U.S. Institute of Peace ranks as the number two government-affiliated think tank in the world, according to the 2013 Global Go To Think Tank Index, set for official release this week. USIP also earned distinctions on the Index’s lists for best U.S. think tanks, global think tanks on defense and national security, and for best conferences.

Research, publications, and public conferences are important elements of USIP’s broader mission to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflicts around the world. In addition, the Institute maintains a presence in conflict zones around the world. Its programs in places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Africa are designed to build the capacity of local civil society organizations, governments, and individuals to resolve conflicts without violence.  Rigorous evaluation of those programs, in turn, inform the analytical facet of the Institute’s work.

Compiled by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the International Relations Program of the University of Pennsylvania, the annual think tank survey is meant “to increase the profile and performance of think tanks and raise the public awareness of the important role think tanks play in governments and civil societies around the globe.”
