Fifty-two American high school students selected in 2003 National Peace Essay Contest.

WASHINGTON—Fifty-two American high school students have been named state winners of the 16th annual National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for his or her efforts, and will now compete for the 2003 national first prize, a $10,000 college scholarship.

The 52 winners will represent their states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia in a program for state-level winners in Washington, D.C. from June 21 to 26, 2003. Students will meet with senior U.S. government and foreign embassy officials, members of Congress, and other experts involved in the making of American foreign policy. They will also assume the roles of Russian and Chechen public officials and activists in a three-day problem solving simulation focusing on the conflict in Chechnya. The purpose of the exercise is to encourage the students to examine the justifications for the use of force in dealing with an ethnic conflict. At week's end, the national first-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced, and scholarships of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 respectively will be awarded at a banquet on June 25.

More than 1,250 students from American high schools throughout the United States and abroad submitted essays to this year's contest while nearly 5,000 students wrote essays. The 2003 theme challenged participants to examine the justifications for war. A list of winners, their schools, hometowns, essay topics, and faculty coordinators follows this release. [Go to list]

"It is crucial for our country that tomorrow's leaders understand that international conflict management and peace processes are essential components of U.S. foreign relations in the post-Cold War world," said Dr. Richard H. Solomon, president of the United States Institute of Peace. "The National Peace Essay Contest allows students to directly see the relationship between the world of learning and the world of public affairs and peacemaking. The United States needs a new generation of creative, resourceful, and innovative leaders. The Peace Essay Contest provides a jump-start to interesting this upcoming generation in careers dedicated to international affairs."

You can keep apprised of what students are doing during their week in Washington on the Institute's web site, www.usip.org. An electronic press kit with additional information on this year's state winners and the National Peace Essay Contest week will be available online soon.
