Grant making in the Middle East and North Africa region will support both research and practitioner projects which align with the United States Institute of Peace’s strategic priorities. Projects will focus on facilitation of democratic transitions, strengthening the rule of law, and the improvement of relations between minority, ethnic, and religious groups.

Specific areas of priority include:

  • Rule of law, governance and transitional justice
  • Post-conflict reconciliation and conflict resolution
  • Inter-communal dialogue, projects promoting the inclusion of and better relations with minorities and ethnic groups.
  • The role of youth in conflict prevention and conflict resolution
  • The role of civil society organizations in building consensus on national reconciliation processes
  • Gender and peacebuilding
  • Media and science in peacebuilding and conflict resolution
  • Economic drivers of conflict and/or the economic impact of conflict

Priority will also be given to local organizations, but U.S. and international organization with a strong history of work in the region may also apply. The Institute’s strategic focus for this round of grants is Iraq, Tunisia, Libya, Iran, the Syrian Conflict, Yemen and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Applicants for Arab-Israeli conflict based projects should follow the guidelines listed on the Supporting Innovation in Israeli and Palestinian Peacebuilding Grant page. However, we encourage all strong applications for programs or research for any country in the region to apply.
