Security Sector Reform in Liberia: Domestic Considerations and Regional Implications
Security sector reform is one of the Liberian government's four pillars of development. A key security concern is the role that the army will play in Liberian politics and society in general. The government's military reforms will reposition and reduce the role of the armed forces in Liberian politics, which have been heavily militarized, by creating a relatively small army of 2,000. A second major security concern centers on the increased crime in Monrovia.
The panelists at this meeting of the Liberia Working Group will provide an overview of Liberia's plans for reforming its military, assess the Liberian government's plans for combating the spike in robberies and other violent crimes in Monrovia, and discuss the conditions governing the UN Mission in Liberia's eventual drawdown.
