Managing International Conflict: Skills Training for Humanitarian and Peace Operations
The Institute, in partnership with the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, held a seminar onboard the US Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island for thirty-four civilian and military participants from the ministries of foreign affairs and defense from twenty-one countries. This was the sixth seminar conducted by USIP for DIILS.
Advanced Negotiating Skills in Multilateral Diplomacy for the OSCE
Program Officers Ted Feifer and Mike Lekson led a workshop on advanced negotiating skills in multilateral diplomacy for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, November 5-7, 2003. Six participants were from the OSCE Secretariat, and nine were from the Russian, Slovenian, Spanish, Czech, Greek, Portuguese, and Irish delegations to the OSCE.
Professional Skills Training with the Defense Ministry of Serbia and Montenegro
From October 13 to October 21, the Institute conducted the first two professional skills workshops in a new collaboration with the Defense Ministry of Serbia and Montenegro.
Conflict Resolution Workshop in Bogota, Colombia
In partnership with the Colombia-based "Ideas for Peace" Foundation (Fundacion "Ideas Para la Paz"), the Institute conducted a Practitioner´s Workshop in Resolving Conflict and Building Civil Society for some 40 Colombians actively engaged in addressing the challenges facing their country.
Training for the OSCE Mission to Serbia and Montenegro
Program Officer Ted Feifer and Program Director George Ward conducted negotiations and diplomatic skills training for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Serbia and Montenegro on September 16-18, 2003. This was our first training partnership with the mission in Belgrade.
Professional Development Workshop at the OSCE Mission in Tbilisi
The Republic of Georgia has experienced two separatist conflicts that have generated many internally displaced persons and led to deployment of missions of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the UN, as well as involvement of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Caucasus Regional Workshop for Negotiation and Conflict Management Skills
Working in partnership with the Tbilisi-based Internally Displaced Women´s Association (IDPWA), USIP Professional Training Program officers Anne Henderson and Mike Lekson conducted a four-day conflict management workshop. The workshop´s main goal was to bring together civil society and government practitioners from across the Caucasus to build skills in the fields of conflict analysis, problem solving, negotiation, and third party involvement in dispute resolution.
Building the Philippine Future
USIP Training Program officers Ray Caldwell and Greg Noone conducted two workshops for practitioners in Manila. The 70 participants represented a diverse group of government agencies, particularly the Office on Muslim Affairs and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, together with leaders of non-governmental organizations from around the country, and especially Mindanao.
Negotiation and Conflict Management Skills
Working in partnership with the Uzbek Business Women's Association (BWA), USIP brought together female entrepreneurs from throughout Uzbekistan for a three-day workshop. The workshop's main goal was to provide training in negotiation and problem solving skills for women involved in private business ventures.
Dialogue on Democracy
In response to an invitation from the State Department's Under Secretary for Global Affairs, Ms. Paula Dobriansky, the Institute participated in a conference organized by the Community of Democracies.
