USIP Professional Training Officers Nina Sughrue and Jacki Wilson conducted a three and half day seminar for 32 participants from humanitarian NGOs, U.S. government agencies, U.S. and UK military, and international organizations involved in relief and peace operations. They used exercises and simulations to help participants further develop their skills in negotiation, conflict analysis, cross-cultural communication and mediation. By promoting interaction and dialogue among diverse participants with distinct but overlapping missions, the program also aimed to develop participants' capacity to build trust, identify shared objectives, and work collaboratively.
The NGOs represented were Amnesty International, CARE International, Save the Children, ADCI/VOCA, Mercy Corps, Institute for Sustainable Communities, the Non-Violent Peace-front, and Catholic Relief Services. The international organizations were the UN and the Red Cross. Two participants were from USAID's Food for Peace Office and one was a West Point professor. Four of the participants were from the UK, five were from Kosovo, and one each from Sierra Leone, Haiti, Georgia, and Rwanda. The diversity of the participants, both ethnically and professionally, greatly enriched the workshop.
