(Washington) – This year marks the 40th anniversary of Henry Kissinger’s secret trip to China. This unique diplomatic initiative began the process of normalizing America’s relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

USIP President Richard Solomon worked on Kissinger’s National Security Council staff in the early 1970s, supporting of the process of US-PRC normalization. In this effort, Solomon worked with Ambassador John Holdridge, Kissinger’s senior adviser on Asian affairs. Since Holdridge’s passing in 1991, an annual memorial lecture has commemorated his contributions to American diplomacy and the normalization of relations with China.

On November 15, Solomon delivered this year’s Holdridge Memorial Lecture in an event at the Institute. His speech surveys the early challenges of building a constructive relationship with China and highlights the challenges of managing the relationship in contemporary circumstances.
