On January 31, USIP hosted remarks from USAID Administrator Samantha Power and a conversation with frontline Sudanese responders and analysts. The discussion explored the experiences of Sudanese civilian-led emergency response rooms, the imperative to activate USAID’s localization agenda, and the priorities and needs of Sudanese civilians in the year ahead.
On July 28, USIP held a discussion delving into the work of the Sudan Conflict Observatory, Youth Citizens Observers Network and other monitoring organizations to examine the progression of the war, efforts to address atrocities, and ways to prevent the conflict from spreading further.
On June 23, USIP hosted a discussion with Sudanese activists and scholars on how Sudanese civic leaders can learn from their earlier strengths as they recover from the 2021 coup — as well as what the path forward might hold for the pro-democracy movement in Sudan and their global allies.
Ahead of the Biden administration’s Summit for Democracy, USIP held a two-part event that examined the dynamics driving four of the seven coups and coup attempts that we’ve seen over the past two years. Day 1 featured panel discussions on Sudan and Mali.

On December 5, to mark the Fifth Annual Arab-American Day, the League of Arab States and the U.S. Institute of Peace hosted a discussion with Arab women leaders, academics and policymakers, including the newly-elected Minnesota House Representative and Somali American, Ilhan Omar, on how education and economic opportunities can engage women and men in supporting women’s voices, equality and success.
On September 13, the U.S. Institute of Peace, Search for Common Ground and other partners held a Conflict Prevention and Resolution Forum including USAID Agency Youth Coordinator Michael McCabe. Speakers, including youth leaders, discussed how young women and men are leading such work and what policymakers can do to ensure that the largest generation of youth the world has ever known is not left on the sidelines.
