On November 30, USIP hosted a conversation with Ambassador Daniel Feldman, the former chief of staff and counselor to Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry. Ambassador Feldman, who attended COP27, offered his insights from the trip and discussed how the conference’s focus on climate justice, climate financing, and debt-for-climate swaps will impact South Asian countries.
On November 4, USIP hosted a conversation with five of the essayists on the sources of tension in the Japan-South Korea relationship and the creative ways in which policymakers, practitioners, and experts can address topics such as forced labor, collective wartime memories, the legacy of “comfort women,” the U.S.-South Korea-Japan trilateral alliance, and regional stability.
On October 25, USIP hosted a conference that brought together former senior officials and top experts to explore these critical questions and identify lessons to inform U.S. policy in the future. The conference featured three public panels that looked at why no meaningful intra-Afghan peace talks took place from 2001 to 2021, as well as the missed opportunities and missteps that derailed efforts to reach a political settlement to the conflict.

USIP hosted a two-part livestream of USIP’s Dialogue on War Legacies and Peace. The event brought together diplomats, advocates and authors to draw lessons from U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia that could apply to conflicts elsewhere in the world. The inspiring presentations looked at how Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians are healing from wartime suffering and building a future based on trust and shared interests.

To discuss the report and its implications, on September 29, USIP and the report’s authors, Mubashar Hasan and Geoffrey Macdonald, hosted a timely virtual discussion moderated by USIP senior advisor Daniel Markey.
On September 20, USIP hosted a look at the final report from the USIP Senior Study Group on China’s Influence on the Freely Associated States — the fifth in a series. The study group’s co-chairs examined the report’s findings and discussed how Beijing’s growing presence in the region is affecting political, economic and security trends in the FAS.

The conversation also looked at what role the international community can play in helping Pakistan recover from this humanitarian crisis and better prepare for future disasters.
