Lieutenant Colonel Kurt H. Meppen is a career Army Foreign Area Officer (Eurasia). He most recently served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as the Central Asia policy director from 2002 to 2005.
In 2001, he was the U.S. Army fellow at the George C. Marshall European Center for Strategic Studies. From 1998 to 2001, Meppen served as the U.S. defense attaché to Turkmenistan.
He previously served as a tactical intelligence officer in the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 3rd Infantry Division and was a counternarcotics intelligence officer in Central America. He has commanded two intelligence companies.
He holds a master of science in strategic intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College and a B.A. in political science from the University of Idaho.
