Background
William Schabas is professor and chair of the department of
law at the University of Quebec, Montreal, where he is a specialist
in international human rights law, international criminal law, and
minority rights. Before joining the university in 1991, Schabas spent
nearly twenty years as a freelance journalist, translator, and
speechwriter. Also since 1991, he has been an instructor with the
Canadian Foreign Service Institute. Schabas serves as an assessor
with the Quebec Human Rights Tribunal and participated in human
rights fact-finding missions to Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, South Africa,
and Guyana on behalf of several international NGOs. He has held
visiting professorships at the University of Montpellier and the
University of Paris, Nanterre. Schabas has received such awards as
the Canadian Business Press Editors Association's Kenneth R. Wilson
Award for best editorial (1978, 1979), and the Fondation du Barreau
du Quebec's prize for best monograph (1995). He has written numerous
books and articles on legal issues, including The Abolition of the
Death Penalty in International Law, International Human Rights Law
and the Canadian Charter, and The Death Penalty as Cruel
Treatment and Torture. Schabas holds an M.A. from the University
of Toronto and an LL.D. from the University of Montreal.
