Background
John Menzies was U.S. ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina
from October 1995 to December 1996. As a foreign service officer, he
has been assigned to various posts, primarily in Eastern Europe,
working to promote democracy in the post-Cold War period. Menzies
served as public affairs officer in Bulgaria in 1988-91, helping to
create the American University in Bulgaria. In 1997, he received the
American Bar Association's award for dedication and service toward
advancing the rule of law, and in 1994, the Rivkin Award from the
American Foreign Service Association for "constructive dissent."
Menzies holds a Ph.D. in German from the University of California,
Berkeley.
