Background
Sonja Biserko, a seasoned diplomat with over twenty years in
the foreign service of the former Yugoslavia, is currently the head
of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia and a member of
the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights. Her recent
work has focused on refugee resettlement issues in the former
Yugoslav republics and efforts to promote regional dialogue between
Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo. She also has been involved in efforts
to collect and document war crimes committed during the Bosnian
conflict.
In 1991-92, Biserko was a founding member of the European Movement in Yugoslavia, the Center for Anti-War Action, and the Belgrade Forum for International Relations. She has organized programs to train lawyers in human rights and conducted projects on Croatian refugee resettlement and the establishment of an international tribunal on war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. Biserko has written and edited several books examining the collapse of Yugoslavia, war crimes, and the radicalization of Serbian society. She holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Belgrade.
