I am grateful to my colleagues at the Institute for the creative conditions they provided for me and my work. I would also like to express my appreciation to the prominent political figures who agreed to discuss their thoughts on self-determination in exclusive interviews. I am also grateful to my colleague at the Moscow-based Institute for Economy in Transition, Nikolai Rudensky, who helped me prepare materials for writing portions of part 3 of this study. My special gratitude goes to Frederick Williams, my research assistant at the United States Institute of Peace. And, of course, I am grateful to the representatives of those peoples among whom I have lived during many long scholarly expeditions and who inspired me and my colleagues with their striving for independence.
