USIP is supporting a research project being undertaken by Winifred Tate, an anthropologist and former USIP Peace Scholar, to document and analyze the role of women in local community-based conflict resolution efforts in the Putumayo department of Colombia.
The importance of women leaders in community-based peacebuilding efforts in Colombia is widely recognized but little understood. Anecdotal reports have featured individual leaders but have not discussed the evolution and impact of their efforts. Both the Catholic Church and non-governmental organizations seek to nurture civil society leadership in peacebuilding in the region despite the entrenched ongoing conflict. This project examines the impact of the illicit economy on peacebuilding efforts, as well as the national and transnational networks facilitating such efforts.
Activities
This project will produce written products of use to scholars and practitioners, including an academic article, and a policy brief.
