April 6, 2012
Newton is Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director, Air Staff, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, in Washington, D.C. He oversees the administration and organization of the Air Staff, which develops policies, plans and programs; establishes requirements; and provides resources to support the Air Force's mission.
Newton met with USIP President Richard Solomon, Chief of Staff and retired Army colonel Paul Hughes, South Asia Adviser Moeed Yusuf, Sheldon Himelfarb, Director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Peacebuilding, and Mike Lekson, Director of Gaming for the USIP Academy. Their wide-ranging discussion touched on USIP’s efforts to promote dialogue between India and Pakistan and ease tensions in the volatile Kashmir region; to harness the power of technology for crisis mapping, humanitarian response, and interagency coordination; and USIP’s training programs. USIP expects to continue collaboration with the Air Force, as both organizations share a common mission to prevent conflicts from escalating to violence.
The meeting was organized by Marcia Wong, USIP’s director for intergovernmental affairs.
