Haiti: A Forward Look
Peace Brief | Robert Perito and Casie Copeland | June 2010
Five months after Haiti’s January 12th earthquake, the situation on the ground remains critical. With the arrival of hurricane season, the failure to provide adequate shelter and instill hope for a better future threatens stability.
The International Donors’ Conference and Support for Haiti’s Future
Peace Brief | Robert Maguire and Casie Copeland | May 2010
At the March 31, 2010 International Donors’ Conference on Haiti some $10 billion was pledged in support of the government of Haiti’s “Action Plan for National Recovery and Development of Haiti,” with $5.3 billion earmarked for the next two years. A Multi-Donor Trust Fund, managed by the World Bank, will oversee the allocation of international resources toward activities approved by a mixed Haitian/international Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC).
Haiti: A Republic of NGOs?
Peace Brief | Madeline Kristoff and Liz Panarelli | April 2010
Concerns about the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Haiti’s development have been present for decades. However, these issues have gained increasing prominence following the January 12, 2010 earthquake that destroyed much of Port-au-Prince.
USIP’s Haiti Working Group focuses the attention of Washington policymakers on Haiti. Monthly meetings convene a group of officials, experts, practitioners, and interested members of the public to discuss developments in Haiti and in U.S.-Haitian relations. In 2010, USIP is focusing on supporting the international community’s recovery efforts following the January 12th earthquake.
USIP's Haiti Program is directed by Robert Perito. The Chairman of the Haiti Working Group is Robert Maguire, Associate Professor at Trinity Washington University and former USIP Jennings Randolph Senior Fellow.
Through the Working Group, USIP has convened public forums and produced thoughtful publications on Haiti since 2006.
Our most recent meeting was:
- April 8, 2010 on What the Donors' Conference Means for Haiti's Future. You can read the event summary and listen to the audio.
