Meetings on Cyprus
In response to an inquiry from the U.S. Amabassador Kenneth Brill in Nicosia, Cyprus, Tim Sisk, program officer in the Grant Program, and Patricia Carley, program officer in the Research and Studies Program, visited Cyprus for four days in January to explore the possibility of initiating conflict resolution programs on the island and to meet with Institute grant recipientsthe Institute has given a number of grants for bicommunal activities between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Sisk also gave several talks on power sharing to audiences at the University of Cyprus, Intercollege, and the American Center, which is part of the U.S. Information Service.Sisk and Carley also met separately with Greek and Turkish Cypriot lawyers, scholars, peace activists, and representatives of political parties on both sides. It was necessary to meet with these groups separately because bicommunal activities on the island have been suspended since December 1997, when the European Union rejected Turkeys application and announced plans to begin membership talks with Cyprus.
