President Clinton, Amatzia Baram, a senior fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and former head of the department of Middle Eastern history at the University of Haifa in Israel, and Bonnie Belkin-Baram attend a menorah-lighting ceremony at the White House Oval Office on December 23, 1997, to celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah. The menorah of white silver—with a dove of peace bearing an olive branch in its mouth perched at the top—was made by Myrim Baram, Amatzia Baram’s father, as a gift to the president in thanks for his work on behalf of Middle East peace. Myrim Baram, a metalworker at Kibbutz Kfar Menahem, Israel, has made over 40 menorahs in memory of his second son, Gabriel, who was killed during the Yom Kippur war in October 1973.
