The United States Institute of Peace brought together a diverse group of speakers to discuss the roles of the international community, particularly the United Nations and regional institutions in the peace processes in Latin America.

Regional and global security experts addressed questions on the links between the fields of security and conflict management and the balance between regional/local security initiatives and global ones. The discussion centered on the themes of USIP’s book, "Rewiring Regional Security in a Fragmented World", edited by Chester A. Crocker, Fen Olsen Hampson, and Pamela Aall.

This event, held in Palo Alto, discussed the latest approaches to understanding the role of new media in peace and conflict. The conference brought together a diverse array of innovators from across the public, private and academic communities to share research in progress, with a particular focus on harnessing the insights of Silicon Valley companies whose products have been key enablers of political activism from Tehran to Tunisia, Cairo to Colombia.

Vice President Garzón is the first senior Colombian official to visit Washington since the inauguration of President Juan Manuel Santos in August 2010.  Garzón will discuss new directions taken under the Santos government, in such areas as social and agrarian reform, peace, human rights, and foreign policy.
