A scandal involving murder allegations against the president and escalating violence from drug trafficking threaten Guatemala’s stability. Former USIP grantee Anita Isaacs recently traveled to the Central American country, where she witnessed massive demonstrations that exposed the fragility of Guatemala’s democracy.

May 2008

In May 2008, the United States Institute of Peace's (USIP) Ted Feifer, Maria Jessop-Mandel, and Mary Hope Schwoebel and the Organization of American States' (OAS) Logioco Bautista, presented a course on "Conflict Management and Resolution" to the 64 students of Class XLVII of the Inter-American Defense College (IADC) at Fort McNair.

May 2007

Senior Training Officer Ted Feifer provided two days of training in communication, negotiation and mediation in cross-cultural and emotional situations to 18 participants in a month-long course conducted by the Spanish non-governmental organization Helsinki Espana.

In conjunction with the Organization of the American States (OAS), the Institute conducted a one-week workshop for over eighty senior Latin American and Caribbean military officials along with special invited guests from the resident military missions for the Inter American Defense College (IADC) at Fort McNair, Washington DC.

Acting Training Program Director Mike Lekson and Professional Training Officer Nina Sughrue held a seminar at the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) in Newport, Rhode Island for twenty-six civilian and military participants from nineteen countries.

The Institute, in partnership with the Inter-American Defense College and the Organization of American States' Unit for the Promotion of Democracy, held a seminar at Ft. McNair, Washington, DC for seventy-five senior government officials and military officers, including fifty-five students of the IADC.

June 2003

In response to an invitation from the State Department's Under Secretary for Global Affairs, Ms. Paula Dobriansky, the Institute participated in a conference organized by the Community of Democracies.

The Institute, in partnership with the Inter-American Defense College, held a seminar at Ft. McNair, Washington, DC for one hundred senior government officials and military officers, including sixty students of the IADC. Participants came from twenty-eight countries from the Americas including Canada and the US, as well as the Organization of American States.
