The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan are two of the most troubled provinces of Pakistan. The porous border areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan suffer from serious violent conflict due to the Taliban’s heavy presence in these areas.

 USIP has been actively working on the ground in Sudan to help create a peaceful setting with its USIP training programs on non-violent conflict resolution and election workshops.

In the rugged highlands of Laikipia at the Gallman Memorial Wildlife Conservancy, Kenyan youth met for three days to turn energy and creativity into projects with goals, targeted audiences and intended outcomes.  The workshop was facilitated by USIP Senior Program Officer Jacki Wilson with consultant Dr. Eran Fraenkel.

ETC/I Trainer Ted Feifer led a program on conflict resolution skills for visiting African conflict managers and peace-builders on behalf of the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program in Washington, June 11, 2008.

Education and Training Center International (ETC/I) Program Officer Mary Hope Schwoebel taught the course “Practical Approaches to Peacebuilding and Development” at American University’s Summer Institute for Peacebuilding and Development (PDI) June 9-13, 2008.

In March 2008, USIP brought 40 young Iraqi leaders from Iraq to Dharamsala, India for five days of intense dialogue. The young leaders, from all professional backgrounds, also represented the diversity of Iraqi society. The dialogue experience was described as "transformative" as the leaders explored concepts of tolerance, diversity, democracy, citizenship and life in a war zone.
 

November 2007

On November 5, 2007, Senior Program Officers Jonathan Morgenstein, Keith Bowen, and Noor Kirdar concluded the third of three workshops in USIP's 2007 Kirkuk Reconciliation Program.

March 2007

With tremendous support from the Institute’s Baghdad Office, the Iraq Institute for Economic Reform (IIER) conducted a five-day SENSE and Conflict Management training exercise for the Baghdad Provincial Council at the request of the Baghdad Provincial Reconstruction Team. This session was also supported by Training Program Officer Allison Frendak and confirmed the success of the effort to establish an Iraqi-managed SENSE capability.
