The "Fruit of Our Labor" is a collection of Afghan short films that bring to life ordinary Afghans' efforts to address their challenging social and economic conditions.  The films present a fresh view of Afghanistan; stories of ability, need, and survival. Join us for a screening of several of these films.

This event will bring together a distinguished panel of current USIP grantees to discuss motivations and grievances of the insurgents in Afghanistan and in Pakistan, feasibility and challenges of negotiations with Afghan insurgents, and the perceptions of Pakistani youth about the future of their country.

This event features four USIP grantees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia and Sudan who are intimately familiar with the on-the-ground realities in their countries. The grantees discuss implementing peacebuilding projects in difficult and dangerous environments. Washington planners will be able to hear first hand what on-the-ground practitioners are doing to stay safe while getting important work done.

For the first time, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is participating in the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival. The two organizations have teamed up to present a thematic strand of six films that explore the human side of conflict. The strand is called "Peacebuilding on Screen."

In September 2009, the United States announced a new course in its policy toward Burma following a review undertaken by the Obama administration. Recognizing that decades of pursuing policies of isolation and sanctions have done little to influence change in Burma, the U.S. introduced a policy of "pragmatic engagement," initiating efforts to expand channels of communication with Burma’s military leaders.
