After three and half years of independent existence and two nation-wide elections, Kosovo has gained considerable experience with the functioning of institutions that are vital to a democracy, including a free press. Jeta Xharra, Kosovo’s leading investigative journalist and host of “Life in Kosovo” on public television channel RTK, addressed the status of the media and freedom of the press in Kosovo on September 21 from 10-12pm.

In the aftermath of war, two processes are vital to successfully manage the transition to stability: disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) and security sector reform (SSR).  On September 12, 2011, the U.S. Institute of Peace hosted a panel of distinguished experts with combined experience implementing DDR and SSR in Afghanistan, Iraq, Liberia, the Balkans, Somalia and Haiti.

This event celebrated the publication of Youth in Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Agents of Change by Stephanie Schwartz published by the U.S. Institute of Peace. Using three cases of post-conflict reconstruction—Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kosovo—this study goes beyond the well documented cases focused exclusively on child soldiers to examine the roles of the broader youth population and their impact on the reconstruction process. The panelists drew on their own experiences working with youth in conflict zones to distill best practices in addressing youth needs in areas of conflict and pinpointed what issues must be resolved as we look to the future.

Pieter Feith, the EU special representative in Kosovo (EUSR) and international civilian representative (ICR), gave an update on developments in Kosovo in the past two years.  He reflected upon his double-hatted role as the ICR/EUSR as well as on the EU’s role in Kosovo and on EU-U.S. cooperation.

Economics and Finance Minister of Kosovo Ahmet Shala will talk about the new infrastructure projects in Kosovo, including transportation, telecommunication, energy, and waste management. He will also give his views on the current problems that Kosovo faces such as the trade blockade on Kosovo's exports to Serbia and Bosnia, membership in the International Financial Institutions, and regional integration.

In a major diplomatic victory for both countries, Kosovo and Macedonia recently concluded the demarcation of their shared border. This process of diplomacy, cooperation, confidence-building and reconciliation was conducted by a Joint Technical Commission (JTC) comprised of the two state parties and the International Civilian Office (ICO).
