When the U.S. Institute of Peace decided it would open a permanent office in Baghdad in 2004 to bring its training expertise and conflict resolution skills to the war in Iraq, it quickly became apparent to USIP personnel that the Institute was entering a whole new phase.

Iraqi minorities are facing extinction -- the number of Christians for example has been halved, from 1.5 million in 2003 to about 850,000 today. USIP has been working with and supporting Iraq’s Christian and other minority communities since 2005, helping them to find Iraqi solutions to a seemingly insurmountable crisis.

On August 3-4, USIP’s Center of Innovation for Media, Conflict and Peacebuilding conducted a two-day youth summit in Erbil as part of the "Peace Media for Iraqi Youth" project. USIP, along with four local NGOs, brought together 30 Iraqi youth (ages 14-18) from across the country to participate in activities aimed at supporting a new and growing community of young Iraqis committed to peacebuilding.
