  • On December 15th, USIP hosted a panel of current and former officials from the U.S., Japan and South Korea that examined the post-2012 political, economic and security landscape in Northeast Asia following leadership changes – both democratically facilitated and planned.  Against this background, the panel assessed challenges and opportunities for the U.S., Japan and South Korea.

  • Kim Jong Un, son of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, appears poised to accept a transfer of power from his father.  While the nature and timing of that transfer is not known, even more uncertain is the future of the country he would inherit.   What can international experts learn from migrants and refugees about health and other conditions in North Korea?  A panel of experts discussed these questions at a critical time in North Korea’s history. This event took place on October 19, 2010.

Published by the U.S. Institute of Peace, this landmark study offers a rich and detailed portrait of the negotiating practices of American officials.

  • Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell joined USIP President Richard H. Solomon to discuss the Obama administration's next steps in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

  • USIP's Paul Hughes discusses the formation and mandate of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States as well as some of the commission's key findings and recommendations, such as reengaging Russia and strengthening the international nonproliferation regime.
