USIP identifies and applies best practices in seven topical areas whose issues cross each phase of conflict through this series of Centers.

In November 2008, USIP supported a joint-initiative of the Conferencia de Religiosos y Religiosas de Colombia, the organizing body of Catholic men’s and women’s religious orders, and Justapaz, a Menonite organization, to convene a four-day workshop outside of Bogota for Catholic and Protestant women peacemakers.  This workshop provided an opportunity for women doing peace work on the ground through their churches to share best practices, network, and conceive future joint-initiatives.

Established in October 2009, the Gender and Peacebuilding Center coordinates the gender-related work of USIP. The Center, headed by Kathleen Kuehnast, reflects the Institute’s commitment to gender awareness in both its analytical and practitioner work on conflict and peacebuilding.

USIP staff is working diligently towards conflict analysis and prevention and peace building in Pakistan through its various programs and projects.

 Justice and Security Dialogue brings together stakeholders at the local community level to strengthen rule of law and security by building lines of communication, increasing trust, sharing information, promoting accountability, and providing input on justice and security reform needs and options.

The Security Sector Reform (SSR) Working Group convenes public meetings to discuss critical issues related to the reform of police and military forces and their supervising institutions in conflict-affected countries.

As the dramatic events of the Arab Spring turn to the more mundane yet vital work of governance, constitution writing and peacebuilding, USIP is on the ground, bringing its unique brand of action and expertise to the effort.
