Building Local Conflict Management Capacity in the “Three Areas”

In the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed in January of 2005, the contentious "Three Areas" of Sudan—Abyei, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile—were set aside for special treatment.  To help prepare the citizens of the Three Areas for these new processes, USIP conducts capacity-building workshops to help manage and prevent violent conflict.

EVP Phase I: North/South Workshops

USIP conducted a series of electoral violence prevention workshops throughout north and south Sudan in 2009 with participants who represent key institutions that play a critical role in electoral processes. These workshops combined case studies of electoral violence with capacity building in conflict resolution and citizenship skills.

EVP Phase II: Training of Trainers Workshops

After a series of programs on electoral violence prevention throughout Sudan, USIP’s team of trainers worked to develop a north/south network of Sudanese trainers to spread the program content as widely as possible in the short time before Sudan’s elections and referendum.

Going Forward: USIP Goals in Pakistan

Media, Conflict and Peacebuilding

This Center of Innovation focuses on harnessing the power of the media for peacebuilding, and on developing new strategies for countering the abuse of media during conflict.

Security Sector Reform Working Group

The Security Sector Reform (SSR) Working Group convenes public meetings to discuss critical issues related to the reform of police and military forces and their supervising institutions in conflict-affected countries.

Stability Policing Initiative

USIP is working with Center of Excellence for Police Stability Units (CoESPU) to develop a Standard Training Module and readiness standards for stability police units. We are also helping to develop stability policing doctrine and doctrine to protect Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The USIP Open Simulation Platform (USIP OSP)

The field of "war-fighting" games is well advanced. The field of "peacebuilding" games is just beginning. To help leverage technology better, and to make simulation training easily accessible to all educators and trainers, USIP has created the Open Simulation Platform (OSP). The USIP OSP guides teachers and trainers through a process to develop realistic and meaningful simulations.
