May 2009

Senior Program Officers Nina Sughrue and Noor Kirdar continued USIP’s support for the international Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), run by the Italian Caribinieri in Vicenza, Italy. CoESPU, which was established on March 1st 2005, stems from an Italian initiative, supported by the G8 countries to provide technical and financial assistance in order to improve global capacity for sustaining peace stability operations, particularly in African countries.

On February 15, I traveled to Baghdad with Julie Montgomery in order to meet with civil society organizations, media and government officials involved in youth and/or media sectors.

Ted Feifer and Keith Bowen led a third workshop for Rwandan Defense Force officers preparing an infantry battalion for deployment with the United Nations/African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). The training was conducted in partnership with the Department of State's African Contingency Operations and Training Assistance Program (ACOTA).

Ted Feifer and Mary Hope Schwoebel led a seminar at the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) in Newport, Rhode Island for twenty-seven military officers and civilian government officials from seventeen countries, October 29-31, 2008.

Ted Feifer and Mary Hope Schwoebel delivered two one-day workshops on negotiations and mediation in peacekeeping operations to 150 international stability police officers at the Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), in Vicenza, Italy, on October 15-16, 2008.

Senior Program Officers Ted Feifer and Keith Bowen just completed a 3-day workshop preparing 47 Rwandan military officers for forthcoming Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) deployments with the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

November 2006

 Senior Program Officers Keith Bowen and Nina Sughrue held a seminar at the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) in Newport, Rhode Island for thirty-six civilian and military peacekeepers from twenty-four countries. The countries represented were: Argentina, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Colombia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Malaysia, Moldova, Mozambique, Nigeria, the Philippines, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

DIILS in Newport, Rhode Island brings military officers from countries across the world attend a multi-month course in peacekeeping support operations.

July 2005

USIP Professional Training Officer Nina Sughrue and former USIP Education Officer Alan Tidwell conducted a three and half day seminar for 30 participants from humanitarian NGOs, U.S. government agencies, U.S. and UK military, and international organizations involved in relief and peace operations.
