Speaking at an exclusive event at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) on July 23, 2009, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki kept the door open for continuing the U.S. military presence in his country beyond 2011, when the current Status of Forces Agreement expires. “If Iraqi forces need more training and support, we will reexamine the agreement at that time, based on our own national needs,” the prime minister said through a translator, as he addressed nearly 100 audience members at USIP headquarters in Washington, D.C. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on July 9, 2009 appointed USIP Senior Fellow David Tolbert as the next registrar of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). Tolbert, currently a senior fellow with USIP's Jennings Randolph fellowship program from Oct. 1, 2008 through July 31, 2009, will take up his new responsibilities on Aug. 26, 2009. Countries: Lebanon

Three high school students—one each from Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi—have won scholarships of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 respectively as national, first and second place prizes in the National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC) conducted each year by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). |

Eighteen community college faculty members from around the U.S. have just returned from a five-day seminar in Washington, D.C. at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) called, "Global Peace and Security in Community Colleges and the Communities They Serve." During the workshop, they collaborated on ways to integrate teaching about conflict resolution into their already-existing curricula. |

Veteran American journalist Marvin Kalb is joining the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) beginning June 1, 2009, as its first "Writer in Residence." Kalb is working on a book, tentatively titled The Presidents and the War: From Truman to Obama, which focuses on the effect of the Vietnam War on American policy and politics. |

USIP has named Lauren Sucher as the Director of Public Affairs and Communications. Sucher joined USIP as Associate Director of Media Relations in November 2006, and has been Acting Director of Public affairs since March 2009. |

Neil Kritz has been appointed as United States Institute of Peace (USIP) Senior Scholar in Residence. Kritz has spent the past eighteen years creating and building the Institute's Rule of Law Program. In his new role, he will focus primarily on analyzing and advising on efforts to strengthen the Palestinian justice system. Countries: Palestinian Territories

Twelve-Member Bipartisan Group concludes that nuclear dangers can be reduced if U.S. pursues a comprehensive strategy centered on both deterrence and diplomacy. The report says “the threat of nuclear Armageddon has largely receded” but the proliferation of nuclear weapons and fissile materials is dangerously close to a “tipping point.” |
