Twelve-Member Bipartisan Group concludes that nuclear dangers can be reduced if U.S. pursues a comprehensive strategy centered on both deterrence and diplomacy. The report says “the threat of nuclear Armageddon has largely receded” but the proliferation of nuclear weapons and fissile materials is dangerously close to a “tipping point.”

Three high school students—one each from Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi—have won scholarships of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 respectively as national, first and second place prizes in the National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC) conducted each year by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).

Eighteen community college faculty members from around the U.S. have just returned from a five-day seminar in Washington, D.C. at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) called, "Global Peace and Security in Community Colleges and the Communities They Serve." During the workshop, they collaborated on ways to integrate teaching about conflict resolution into their already-existing curricula.

Veteran American journalist Marvin Kalb is joining the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) beginning June 1, 2009, as its first "Writer in Residence." Kalb is working on a book, tentatively titled The Presidents and the War: From Truman to Obama, which focuses on the effect of the Vietnam War on American policy and politics.

USIP has named Lauren Sucher as the Director of Public Affairs and Communications. Sucher joined USIP as Associate Director of Media Relations in November 2006, and has been Acting Director of Public affairs since March 2009.

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is pleased to announce its 2009–2010 class of Jennings Randolph Senior Fellows, who will spend ten months in residence at the Institute working on projects related to peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
