Statement on Signing of the
Sierra Leone Peace Agreement
July 6, 1999
The governments of the United Kingdom and the United States of America would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate the Government of Sierra Leone and the Revolutionary United Front of Sierra Leone on the conclusion of the
peace agreement signed today. We sould also like to express our support for the agreement, which will bring to an end the
tragic war in Sierra Leone. We encourage both parties to continue to demonstrate their commitment to long term peace. We
will continue to encourage and support the implementation of this agreement as appropriate and beneficial to both parties,
and will encourage other members of the international community to do the same.
We would also like to recognize the role played by the government of the Togolese Republic in brokering
this agreement, and the considerable time and effort that President Eyadema and Minister of Foreign Affairs Koffigoh have
devoted to the cause of peace in Sierra Leone during the past several months. Likewise, other members of the ECOWAS
Committee of Seven on Sierra Leone and international organizations provided much needed assistance in this process. The
cooperation of the international community played a vital role in bringing this agreement to conclusion, a role we hope
the international community will continue to play in its implementation.
We sincerely hope that this agreement will help to bring stability, peace, and prosperity to the people of
Sierra Leone by creating a climate that will allow development of the considerable human and material resources of this nation.
