Senior Training Officer Ted Feifer again provided two days of training in communication, negotiation and the role of the third party in cross-cultural and emotional situations to 18 participants in a month-long course conducted by the Spanish non-governmental organization Helsinki Espana.
The training climaxed in an exercise in which participants faced a negotiating problem either as individuals, individuals with the assistance of a third party, or as groups. They subsequently discussed their lessons learned negotiating with and without a third party, and the challenge of consensus decision-making faced in many interagency contexts.
Participants came from Spain, Latvia, Russia, Nigeria, Palestine, Cameroon, Poland, Belarus, Argentina, Colombia, Bangladesh and Trinidad and Tobago. Most came equipped with invaluable field experience in conflict areas.
The focus of the workshop was on skills building for those seeking to work in field missions of international organizations. The month-long Helsinki Espana workshop dovetails with UN and OSCE training programs, and is part of the UN-accredited system of international peace-support operations training (UNITAR).
