Security in Afghanistan: Are We Losing the Peace?

As fighting in Afghanistan has intensified over the part three months, the U.S.-led coalition forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force are facing an increasingly aggressive and complex enemy in the south and southeast, raising concerns about the overall stability and whether the country is on the verge of a new war.

• Is there now full-fledged war in the south and southeast with popular support from local citizens?
• Are the Taliban, narco-mafias, local warlords, and other anti-government forces using the failure of the Karzai Administration to expand its influence outside of Kabul to gain control?
• Who are the insurgents? What do they want? Who is supporting them from the outside?
