Developing Civil Society in Afghanistan: Status and Prospects

Increasing security threats in Afghanistan threaten the development of a vibrant civil society. More than 380 civilians have been killed in insurgent attacks in the past few months alone, according to UN reports, and civil society leaders are often targeted. The ability of international non-governmental agencies to assist in the development of civil society is also undermined.

Given the rising insecurity:

  • What is the current state of civil society in Afghanistan?
  • How is civil society faring amidst increased security threats?
  • How are civil society organizations relating to the Karzai government?
  • What steps are being taken by the local and international communities to protect and enhance civil society?
