Analysis of Colombia and U.S. foreign policy frequently underscore the issues of drug trafficking, guerilla warfare, and paramilitary violence that underlie Colombia’s long-standing internal armed conflict. Yet Colombia boasts a rich experience of peace initiatives involving local, regional, national, and international actors. What can we learn from these experiences that might help transform Colombia’s conflict in the future? Nearly a decade ago with the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1325, the United Nations and member states made a commitment to promote the participation of women in decision-making levels in conflict resolution and peace processes, expand the role and contribution of women in UN field-based operations, and to integrate gender perspectives and training into peacekeeping.
