Directions

Afghanistan's leaders and the international community meet in London this week to sketch the future of Afghanistan and decide upon the scale of effort to rebuild and stabilize the country. The "Afghanistan Compact" presented to the donors offers a blueprint for the future but does not provide details of how assistance will be mobilized to implement the "compact." Following the conference, speakers discussed:

  • Did the London donor's conference recommit the international community to future assistance?
  • What is the nature of that assistance?
  • How can effective implementation be ensured?
  • How will pledges of support and dollars turn into real obligations and contribute to solving Afghanistan's vexing challenges?

Speakers

  • Dr. Barnett R. Rubin
Chair, USIP Afghanistan Working Group | Director of Studies at the Center on International Cooperation, New York University
  • J. Alexander Thier
Rule of Law Program, U.S. Institute of Peace | Former Senior Rule of Law Advisor to Afghanistan's Constitutional and Judicial Reform Commissions in Kabul
  • Beth DeGrasse, U.S. Institute of Peace, Moderator
