Overview
How can the United States and the Republic of Korea successfully meet the challenges of maintaining their fifty-year-old alliance under the strain of the rapidly evolving South Korean domestic political scene and in the face of North Korea's nuclear weapons challenge? On May 16 the United States Institute of Peace in cooperation with the National Defense University co-hosted a special one-day public conference, "The U.S.-ROK Alliance at Fifty: Continuity, Change, and Implications for the Future."
Held from 8:00 to 5:15 in the Ronald Reagan Building's new auditorium, the conference was designed to explore the challenges of maintaining the historically successful United StatesRepublic of Korea alliance in a rapidly changing regional and global context. The conference explored issues including:
- The ongoing evolution and changing context of the U.S.-ROK alliance.
- Domestic and international pressures on the alliance.
- Emerging regional security challenges in a changing political environment.
- The regional context of the allianceincluding views from China, Japan, and Russia.
- Future challenges for the allianceboth from inside and out.
As part of the Institute's outreach efforts, the proceedings for "The U.S.-ROK Alliance at Fifty" were webcast live from the Ronald Reagan Building throughout the day. To continue the dialogue and discussion started at the conference, archived audio from the webcast is available below.
