  • Suggested Readings on Conflict Resolution from USIP Staff
The Education and Training Center has developed a list of book titles on general conflict resolution that USIP staff have found helpful or important. We developed this list as an aid for people who are looking for some guidance in the field. In order to keep the list general and manageable, we have excluded texts that address specific conflicts or that address a narrow aspect of conflict resolution. The readings are categorized to reflect the three USIP centers of excellence and are alphabetized separately under each category: Conflict Analysis and Prevention, Mediation and Conflict Resolution, and Post-Conflict Peace and Stability Operations. The list includes two additional sections titled For the Practitioner and Basic Essentials. These categories are intended to address books on practical aspects of conflict resolution for practitioners and basic essentials for those interested in a short list of titles that might form the basis of a new or larger collection. This list is not meant to exclude or judge any particular titles, but merely to provide the user with a useful place to start.
  • "The Iraq Experience" DVD
Based in large part on interviews with USIP experts and American civilians returning from the initial deployments to post-Saddam Iraq, this 2004 DVD provides a readily accessible interactive briefing on Iraq's people, culture, and recent history, with a focus on assignment-related experience and lessons learned. Sections on the security and political environment provide useful "current history," but definitely demonstrate that things have changed in the ensuing three years; the sections on Iraqi history, society, and culture remain valid and valuable.
  • Applied Conflict Transformation, Responding to Conflict
USIP supported the development of these four training manuals for NGOs. The manuals include: Theories of Conflict - Causes, Dynamics and Implications; Conflict, Power and Change - Engaging with Actors, Systems, Structure and Policies; Action Research; and Transforming Violent Conflict. The manuals are excellent advanced training materials and well-suited to university-level students or adult learners.
  • Peace Agreements
The Peace Agreements Digital Collection, part of USIP's library, contains the full text of many of the agreements signed by the major contending parties ending inter- and intra-state conflicts worldwide since 1989.
  • Truth Commissions
The Truth Commissions collection, also a part of USIP's library, consists of documents relating to bodies which were established to research and report on human rights abuses over a certain period of time in a particular country or in relation to a particular conflict.
