Alyssa K. Holmen | Magic City Campus | Minot, ND

ND Winner: Alyssa K. Holmen

Alyssa resides in Minot, North Dakota and will be graduating from Minot High School in May of 2006. Her school activities include National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and French Club. She was awarded Minot High School Magician of the Year Award 2004-05 and is listed in Who’s Who among American High School Students. Alyssa is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and occasionally serves in the soup kitchen. She enjoys reading, cooking, and playing the piano. Next fall, Alyssa will attend Minot State University and major in Clinical Laboratory Science.

 
Ohio
Andrew P. DeLong | Amanda Clearcreek High School | Stoutsville, OH

"Controlling the Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons: Algeria and India"

OH Winner: Andrew P. DeLong

Andrew is an Honors student at Amanda Clearcreek High School in Amanda, Ohio. He is the vice president of the school’s National Honor Society chapter, is a member of the Foreign Language Club and Varsity Club, actively shadows an emergency room doctor at a nearby hospital, and is the salutatorian of his class. He played on the varsity basketball team, and was also captain of the golf team. Andrew has traveled to England, Scotland, and New Zealand, where he discovered a newfound adoration for sheep. Andrew will be attending Ohio State University in the fall to study chemistry in order to become a doctor of emergency medicine.

 
Oklahoma
Siddhartha Singh | Jenks High School | Tulsa, OK

"Nuclear Proliferation: An Omnipresent Threat"

OK Winner: Siddhartha Singh

Sid lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma and attends Jenks High School as a sophomore. Although undecided on where to attend college, he hopes to pursue a career in the medical field. While in school, Sid enjoys participating in debate tournaments as a member of the Jenks Debate Squad. Sid has placed at numerous debate tournaments during the school year, and had qualified to attend both the District-level and the Regional-level tournaments. In his freshman year at Jenks, Sid's essay on the Pony Express received 4th place at the state level of National History Day. He is also a member of the Young 3rd "Party-ists" Club at Jenks. Coincidentally, he was notified of his status as the state level winner for NPEC on the eve of his 15th birthday. Sid enjoys listening to music, reading, and playing soccer on a competitive level.

 
Oregon
Grant T. Davenport | Oregon Episcopal School | Portland, OR

"The Determining Factor for Nuclear Non-Proliferation"

OR Winner: Grant T. Davenport

Grant grew up in the Portland, Oregon area. He is currently planning to attend college and study biochemistry or bioengineering. He has been interested in the sciences and has pursued several independent research projects on environmental issues while attending Oregon Episcopal School. He has been active in the Boy Scouts for many years and is proud to have recently achieved the Eagle rank. He has also completed more than 120 hours of community service through Scouts and school. For the last four years, he has participated in a choral group, Pacific Youth Choirs, singing baritone in both the men's a cappella choir and the SATB choir. In his free time, he enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, backpacking, skiing, and almost any activity the outdoors has to offer.

PA Winner: Theresa G. Clarahan

Theresa lives in the quiet town of Franklin, Pennsylvania, with her loving family-- three sisters, one younger brother, and Mom and Dad. She is a junior in high school and plans on attending college after graduating, possibly Grove City College, Pennsylvania, or Patrick Henry College, Virginia. She love reading and enjoys studying history. She has taken violin lessons for several years, volunteered at the local nursing home and library, ran in her town's Applefest 5-K race, won a local essay contest hosted by the Historic Franklin Preservation Association, attended the WPaCO (Western Pennsylvania Christian Orators) speech and debate club for many years, as well as entered the club's tournaments, and worked part-time at an ice-cream shop in town. Her parents have home-schooled her since kindergarten, and her future goal is to follow their example and be an inspiring teacher of either literature or history.

Desiree lives in a small town in Rhode Island. She has been accepted as a pre-medical major at the University of Miami. She hopes to live in Florida and join Doctors without Borders and the Peace Corps. She is also involved in her community service club. She has received various honors and outstanding student awards at school. She was inducted into the National Honor Society.

SC Winner: Gurjeet S. Guram

Jeet is a valedictorian and student body vice president of Irmo High School in Columbia, South Carolina. An alumnus of Boys State and the American Legion's Boys Nation, Jeet has a passion for civic involvement and political debate. In addition to having twice served as a Congressional Intern in Washington, D.C., Jeet has long been an active competitor in the National Forensics League at the state and national levels and was named an Academic All-American by this organization. A National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction, Jeet has a fascination with the sciences; he is a member of his school's National Science Bowl team and has helped them earn two state championships. His experience working as a lab assistant at his local hospital last summer reinforced his interests in pursuing a career in the sciences. In college, he plans to major in biology in preparation for medical school.

"Improving Nuclear Non-Proliferation Action through Studies of India and Ukraine"

TN Winner: Melody F. Shekari

Melody lives in Chattanooga, TN. She is a senior at Girls Preparatory School. This fall, she will attend Bentley College in Waltham, MA, where she will major in business and/or international relations. She is of Iranian descent, but was born in Baycity, TX. In the past three years, she has been in student council twice and been class vice-president. She is also very involved in Model UN, debating and running a number of conferences. She is an active member of the Key Club and volunteers at a camp for kids with special needs and disabilities in the summer. Other interests and activities include the yearbook, National Honor Society, and Beta Club. Also, she works at Steak N’ Shake.
